General Statistics:

  • Population: 2.0 million (2002 Population Census)
  • GDP: US$10.1 billion (2015, World Bank estimate)
  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions: between 10 and 14 million metric tons of carbon-dioxide equivalent emissions over the 2003-2009 period, or approximately 5.6 metric tons per capita.
  • Energy use per capita: 188,860 Kg of oil, 2013.

Important Initiatives related to Climate Change:

INDC: In its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC), submitted to the UNFCCC in 2015, Macedonia set a target of reducing emissions between 30% and 36% below projected business-as-usual levels by 2030. The text of Macedonia’s INDC can be viewed here.

NEEAP: Macedonia has produced its Third National Energy Efficiency Action Plan in 2017. The Action Plan may be found here (currently only in Macedonian language).
