  • Population: 9.7 million (2016 Azerbaijan Statistical Yearbook)
  • GDP: US$53.1 billion (2015, World Bank estimate)
  • Energy use per capita: 1,474 kg of oil, 2013
  • Greenhouse gas emissions: 43.2 million metric tons gross emissions in 2012 (42.1 million metric tons net, accounting for LUCF), on a carbon-dioxide equivalent basis in 1994. Azerbaijan’s 2nd National Communication to the UNFCCC estimated 50.6 million metric tons gross emissions (46.9 net, accounting for carbon sinks).

Important Initiatives related to Climate Change:

INDC: In its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution, Azerbaijan set as its target a reduction of its greenhouse gas emissions by 35% below 1990 levels. The full text of its INDC may be viewed here.

NEEAP: Azerbaijan has produced a Sustainable Energy Action Plan in 2014. The Action Plan may be found here.
